Another Important Notice! (September 1, 2021)

On September 1, 2021 the UKC (United Kennel Club) has made the Acquisition of the FDSB effective Immediately. Such transition can be only noted on the American Fields web site by inspecting thier Logo and the official announcement can be seen in the link below!
FDSB - https://americanfield.villagesoup.com/p/official-announcement-regarding-american-field-publishing-company-and-the-united-kennel-club/1896670?fbclid=IwAR0sX7zOXlpU-TiE2RmL5HDsKOZehuvBuNG919R3ohtxvr_7UUUqYPKD6mM

According to the UKC (website) statement found on the (UKC's September 1,2021 sporting news) section:
https://www.ukcdogs.com/all-breed-sports-news
the transition will not effect the integrity of the Llewellin Setter status or name and we all can be assured of the continuation of the dogs prestige and registry in the years to come. As stated on the UKC web-site -

UKC: “We received several questions and concerns from the Llewellin Setter community. Find comfort in the fact that our intent is to continue to maintain the standards set forth by FDSB for the registration of Llewellin Setters. Dogs not verified through DNA profiles and in accordance with current registration rules and policies will not be brought into the registry as Llewellin Setters. In addition to Llewellin Setters, a few other breeds were previously recognized exclusively by either FDSB or UKC. It is our vision moving forward that the joining of our two registries will open doors to some new opportunities for several breeds that did not previously exist.”

Likewise, as the owner of Dickens Llewellin’s, I will still strive to maintain the standards of integrity in my Llewllin breeding practices as well as that based on the past FDSB rules and regulations. Keep in mind! Since the UKC acquisition is quite new (at the time of this notice) Dickens Llewellin’s will also be reviewing and restructuring as to incorporate any new policies and standards set forth or inherited by the UKC/FDSB transition as to maintain compliance and to continue the integrity of the Llewellin Lineage.

In saying and reporting all the above, as the transitions occurs (if any noticeable) please be aware that any claims made on the Dickens Llewellin web-site reflce that of the FDSB and does not include any new updates in regards to the UKC transition or policies at this time as they have yet to be established, announced, made public, intergrated or reviewed.
As with any new adjustments, it will take some time for any modifications and adjustments to become known and appear on my web-site.

Please be patient and understand it will be a new venture and transition for everyone.

The Dickens and Llewellin's Name

Naturally every individual on this planet tends to be identified by some personal name! The "Dickens Llewellin's" title and and Image you see on this web site are not designed to mislead or confuse anyone into some false impression that I am a business or Commercial breeder (I AM NOT). Dickens Llewellin’s is simply a combination of my last name attached in reference to the Llewellin Setter strain which I own, raise and hunt with and occasionally breed. My goal being to produce better Llewellin hunters as well as a Lemon Colored strain of the Llewellin. But In order to reach that goal, I must breed. But I cannot remain Dog and puppy poor, thus I list the puppies I dont want to keep.

As the sole Owner of my Llewellins, this web site and other of my digital creations I am a private breeder of the Llewellin Setter bloodline/strain. In my efforts to be transparent, this page and web site as a whole is corrected from time to time as to reflect more accurately recollections of events, errors of various natures, and other statements as to offer a more accurate account of the contents. Thus, the below is a brief summary of some 40 plus years and it is very hard to remember the time lines and dates. Forgive me in my confusions if the events jump around!

Experience (since 1978)

Since my youth I was an active bird hunter and have hunted Woodcock, Dove, Bobwhite Quail and other game birds since (or before) 1978. But it was not long after that era that I was invited to my first bird hunt with an Irish Setter. When some hunting buddies invited me on a Quail hunt near one of the local rivers we called the Duck, I quickly laid down my riffle, popped the trunk and grabbed my side-by-side 12 gauge and eagerly joined them.

I was HOOKED! That old irish red dog was tall and seemingly clumsy in the thickets and brush but he did do his part well and found more birds than I ever found while foot hunting alone. It was during that hunt that I realized I was missing out on the benefits of hunting with a bird dog and I vowed that "Some day, I too would own my own Bird Dog as to assist in my hunting ventures and burdens"!

I have to admit; "in my youth and early years, I knew very little about the different breeds of dogs much less heard of bird dogs" and I did'nt even know where to start. So after the above hunt, It took some time and putting the word out to fellow workers and hunters before I hit pay-dog. When a friend offered me my first Bird Dog, I eagerly accepted the animal without hesitations and was so excited I drove 50 miles and met them at 11:30 PM to pick up the pup. Upon picking up the 7 month old pup, I was skeptical as I gazed at her medium size and highly energetic nature and I honestly thought she was the Ugliest dog I had ever laid eyes upon. She would not even sit still while sitting and looked like she was ready to crawl out of her own skin while sitting. I was quickly warned ("Dont take her off the leash or else she will disappear and you will have a hard time catching her!"). Little did I know but my friend gave me my first female Llewellin Setter which I renamed “Bandit” . With papers in hand (which I threw aside with disregards and later stored in the family bible), we hopped in the old Lincoln and drove back home.

Over the years, it was nothing but bird hunting euphoria as Bandit and I shared the pleasure of many fields and hunts; bird after bird, Bandit grew and developed into a formidable bird finding and hunting machine and was not only a seeker, she was also excellent at retrieval's as she loved to find all of the downed birds that I shot and never seemed to tire of her duties. I was very proud of her and showed off her abilities and training while on local hunts with all the other hunters. They were all amazed as she obeyed my every command without fail.
Sadly! It all came to an end shortly after that as Bandit was stolen from me! But there is good in every bad, and in my endless search for her, the search to find her in return launched my endeavor to find her worthy replacement. Unknown to me at the time Bandit would be the best Bird Dog I would own for nearly 2 decades!

Tribute to Bandit and Mr.Patterson!

A fellow neighbor and friend named Mr. Patterson; (an Old School bird dog hunter, trainer, and owner of 4 GSP's) schooled me in his dog training methods. He offered me his expert advice tips and tricks on how to reach my first finished Llewellin Setter. I have ever since been grateful to have known and spent time with Mr. Patterson, for his expert knowledges and advice. It was Mr. Patterson's efforts and willingness to train “Me” so that I could in turn, properly train Bandit and many others to come. That which I have enhanced and fine tuned to my hunting style and use to this day in the training of every Llewellin Setter I own.

Since Bandit's theft many years ago, I have owned and hunted over many breeds of bird dogs and gained much experience in the important areas of training as well as recognizing many of the good qualities in a bird dog. I have also learned that in order to have a good litter of Llewellin Setter Puppies, you have to start with a strong genetics and good stock as such Quality will not come from accidental breeding and/or simply breeding two dogs just because they are the same breed.

Having experienced many different breeds, most with some shortcoming of disappointments; I reflected on this history of finally realized that none were of equal in performance or intelligence as the Llewellin Setter (my Bandit), thus I set out on my venture and quest. In such, I spent the better portion of a year researching and seeking out what I considered some of the finest Llewellin Setters available.”!

Starting fresh with Llewellin Setters, ones I know to be of "Tried and True" fine legendary hunters; I "again" own and house 6 exceptional Llewellin Setters. It is these Llewellin Setters that I place my time, devotion, and love, it is my long search to replace my first, Bandit!

The Llewellin Setter!

Since 1987, I have experience in Owning, Raising, Breeding, and/or hunting with over 10 various breeds of Bird Dogs and it has taken me down a road of the unknown as to offer insights, knowledge and experience. It has allowed me to evaluate many breeds and come to a solid conclusion;
The Llewellin Setter is in fact the ultimate bird dog for me and many others, the Best of the Best!
