Another Important Notice! (September 1, 2021)

On September 1, 2021 the UKC (United Kennel Club) has made the Acquisition of the FDSB effective Immediately. Such transition can be only noted on the American Fields web site by inspecting thier Logo and the official announcement can be seen in the link below!
FDSB - https://americanfield.villagesoup.com/p/official-announcement-regarding-american-field-publishing-company-and-the-united-kennel-club/1896670?fbclid=IwAR0sX7zOXlpU-TiE2RmL5HDsKOZehuvBuNG919R3ohtxvr_7UUUqYPKD6mM

According to the UKC (website) statement found on the (UKC's September 1,2021 sporting news) section:
https://www.ukcdogs.com/all-breed-sports-news
the transition will not effect the integrity of the Llewellin Setter status or name and we all can be assured of the continuation of the dogs prestige and registry in the years to come. As stated on the UKC web-site -

UKC: “We received several questions and concerns from the Llewellin Setter community. Find comfort in the fact that our intent is to continue to maintain the standards set forth by FDSB for the registration of Llewellin Setters. Dogs not verified through DNA profiles and in accordance with current registration rules and policies will not be brought into the registry as Llewellin Setters. In addition to Llewellin Setters, a few other breeds were previously recognized exclusively by either FDSB or UKC. It is our vision moving forward that the joining of our two registries will open doors to some new opportunities for several breeds that did not previously exist.”

Likewise, as the owner of Dickens Llewellin’s, I will still strive to maintain the standards of integrity in my Llewllin breeding practices as well as that based on the past FDSB rules and regulations. Keep in mind! Since the UKC acquisition is quite new (at the time of this notice) Dickens Llewellin’s will also be reviewing and restructuring as to incorporate any new policies and standards set forth or inherited by the UKC/FDSB transition as to maintain compliance and to continue the integrity of the Llewellin Lineage.

In saying and reporting all the above, as the transitions occurs (if any noticeable) please be aware that any claims made on the Dickens Llewellin web-site reflce that of the FDSB and does not include any new updates in regards to the UKC transition or policies at this time as they have yet to be established, announced, made public, intergrated or reviewed.
As with any new adjustments, it will take some time for any modifications and adjustments to become known and appear on my web-site.

Please be patient and understand it will be a new venture and transition for everyone.

THE FIELD DOG STUD BOOK (FDSB)

Currently the FDSB is the oldest U.S dog registry that distinguishes the Llewellin Setter from the English Setter of common! Though the Llewellin is an English Setter Breed, the FDSB will register both (Llewellin Setters and English Setter) correctly and accordingly to their lineage. Thus a common English Setter is registered as an English Setter, and Llewellin English Setters are registered as a Llewellin Setter even though it is an English Setter breed.

The Politics of policy:
FDSB, AKC, UKC, CKC may all recognize each others registry, but may only categorize the breed under their registry rules.

Example: The AKC recognizes and accepts transfer (or dual enrollment) of a registered FDSB "Llewellin Setter" but will only title it as an English Setter. In such the Llewellin would loose its unique and prestige title of Llewellin Setter! ....more on this later.

FDSB

The Field Dog Stud Book (FDSB) and The American Field Dog Association are one and the same which was founded 1874 as the first official pure breed pet registry in the USA. Like the AKC, they are recognized accepted register of purebred dogs but tend to be focused in the field dog competition world. In such Llewellin Setters qualify to participate in many open trial events across the nation.

The FDSB scrutinizes the registration process of the Llewellin Setter breed and will only register a Llewellin Setter litter as a Purebred Llewellin puppy if the DNA from both parents heritage match and can be traced back to the Llewellin bloodline from the 3 specific Llewellin Setter ancestries of Duke, Rhoebe and Kate. This is very specific as you will discover in reading about the Llewellin Setter history.

The FDSB's official web site is called the American Field Sporting Dog Association.
https://www.americanfield.com/

Even today in England UKC, the home and origin of the Llewellin; the Llewellin Strain suffers as there is no official title for the Llewellin strain other than English Setter. Only through extensive research of over 150 years of Pedigrees's would one discover definitely that they had found a true Llewellin.

Since 1874 The American Field (FDSB) ; is solely responsible for maintaining records and strict guideline, rule and policy that regulates the Llewellin Setter Bloodline today in the US.

English Setter or Llewellin Setter?

Understanding the separation of title between an English Setter and a Llewellin Setter is important but is sometimes confusing. Therefore we must rely on the FDSB (Field Dog Stud Book) which recognizes the Llewellin Setter as a specific strain and historical bloodline in the Genealogy of English Setters.

Horace Lytle, one time gun dog editor of the Field & Stream, author and a well-known gun dog trainer, clarified this in the book -How to train your bird dog (1928)-

"...an English Setter may not always be a Llewellin; but a Llewellin is always an English Setter"

UKC Announces Acquisition of American Field Publishing Company

Currently the UKC has acquired FDSB and this area is reserved for the new “adoption/merge” of the FDSB “ into the UKC so please be patient during the transition. Please note that this is not a fail but an advancement of all breeds as quoted from the UKC website

About UKC:
“A Kalamazoo,Michigan-based company founded in 1898, United Kennel Club is the largest all-breed performance-dog registry in the world, registering dogs from all 50 states and 25 foreign countries. Celebrating the unique Total Dog philosophy, UKC events highlight the instincts and heritage of dogs that look and perform equally well, as more than 60 percent of its annually licensed events are tests of hunting ability, training, and instinct. United Kennel Club prides itself on its family-oriented, friendly, educational events, welcoming both purebred dogs and dogs of unknown ancestry. ”

AKC

Note: the AKC is a less desirable registry in registering a Llewellin Setter!

The AKC (American Kennel Club) was founded in 1884 as the 2nd pure blood registry, 10 years after the FDSB was established. The AKC claims to register all recognized breeds of pure bloods of resiterability, thus it will allow the registrar (with proofs) of a FDSB registered Llewellin Setter as it is an English Setter Breed. The AKC and FDSB are compatible registries, meaning that they both recognize and accept each others registrations of pure bloods, but there is the matter of in house polices and rules with each. In such the recognized breeds of registered pets can transfer, dual enroll AKC/FDSB, or compatibly register between the two.

Currently, the AKC will only register a Llewellin Setter as an English Setter, not a Llewellin Setter strain/bloodline, so the FDSB Llewellin title is demoted. As an alternative, few, but some owners and breeders choose to "Dual" register their Llewellins in both the FDSB and AKC so that they may enter their Llewellin/English Setters in more Dog Show and Field trial competitions, etc.

For the Llewellin Setter and the above consideration, there is another reason the AKC (alone) is a less desirable registry; from the breeding prospective AKC/FDSB "polices/rules" clash in compatibility.

In such is a concern and rules of warning that should be understood in its entirety:

If a FDSB registered Llewellin breeds with an AKC registered (only) English Setter: (a Cross Litter)

*. The FDSB will not register the Cross litter as Llewellin Setters, but the FDSB may/will register the cross litter as English Setters

*. The AKC will always register any cross litter an English Setter litter.

*The FDSB considers the FDSB/AKC cross (for the Llewellin) to be rightfully tainted with an outside strain and/or bloodline, destroying the pure blood of the Llewellin Setter.

Remember, the Llewellin bloodline is over 150 years pure!

The spawn of the AKC, was originally to be a more prestige registry offering more appeal to the upper class men or the "Well to Do's" with the focus on the elegance and prestige of the animal in (Bench and Show). In contrast, the FDSB's main focus of events was based on the Gentleman Sport of hunting (Field trials) and show being a second consideration in some major events. Both the AKC and the FDSB's highlights the fact that they register only purebloods of animals.

However, it is rumored that the AKC has now created exception/categories/Classes in policy which allows registry of certain mixed breeds and Shelter pets. I belive this to be a step backwards for the AKC and more a social pressure from the "PETA" like organiziaions, influancing the promotion of inpure pets.

About the IPDBA!

“ALWAYS” verify that the Llewellin Setter Puppy is Field Dog Stud Book (FDSB) registered or registerable!

*The IPDBA (International Progressive Dog Breeders Association) is a newer registry that was created in or around 1996. Currently the IPDBA registers all pure breeds and the Llewellin in its own title. However, this registry started out with a bad buff and at this time the registry is not recognized or accepted by the FDSB, AKC and/or many others; therefore many pets most likely would not transfer, register, enroll or be allowed to compete in other registry and their events! However, dual enrollments might be possible and or allowed.

According to claims and research, the IPDBA is a valid and official registry, but the circumstances that surround its birth is somewhat cloaked with a mystery of rival, claims, and accusations that leads to much speculation. In such I must conclude that:

Though a noble effort it may be:
The IPDBA is believed to be created as both a personal and forced business maneuver which originally serves the private agenda of supporting 2 of the founding members Strain of Llewellin’s, some of which were ejected from the FDSB.

In second agenda, it does serve fairly and complies with the guidelines as a registry for all pure blood breeds, and more importantly, the Llewellin Setter.

A Much needed option!

Due of the lack of support (recognition, transferability, Compatibility, other) between the major registries, and until there is such recognitions, cooperations and neutral agreements, I can only make the following recommendation.

If you do not wish to invest in a Llewellin Setter Puppy (or other breed) that:

  • Cannot or will not be recognized by the FDSB, the AKC and/or many other reputable registers,
  • May not transfer too or into, or will not be accepted in enrollment into the FDSB or possibly other official registries.
  • May not qualify to enter in certain accredited Field Trail, Bench and Show Competitions
then you should not consider the IPDBA as a sole or major registry!

CKC

There are two known registries that operate and are referd to by the abbreviated label CKC, they are:

  1. Canadian Kennel Club
  2. Continental Kennel Club

Since these two registries abbreviations appear in the same manner, certain individuals may use the abbreviations to mislead the buyer into believing that they are purchasing a pet belonging to one registry when in fact it is registered in the other (lesser respected or recognized) registry or kennel club.

Currently, there are many Kennel Club registries that recognise the Canadian Kennel Club but in my research I could not find any mention of the Continental Kennel Club so it is believed that such registry is obsolete or has been rejected, merged or dissolved.

Canadian-CKC.... I have came across the web site, but failed to research the sites policies to any in depth conclusions as Canada/CKC is not within the borders (US), nor of my consideration goals. However, as I understand it, the Canadian Kennel Club is similar to the AKC, acting within the Canadian borders and is well respected and recognized, even in the US.

As to note:

The Continental Kennel Club was not researched in any efforts.
